this was stapled to the rafter in my basement. 6x10 feet! for some reason i felt the inspiration hard and said to myself 'let's makes something 100 times larger than anything i ever panted before'
let's make something bigger than myself. it's difficult and amazing. i never thought i could do it but here it is. you learn so much about yourself and how you work when you use your entire body to paint a space.
Outrageously inventive and stylized, with enough energy to power a small village; more than enough élan and sheer love of the medium to satisfy the demands of the initial epic ambition of a piece this size with this much going on in it. There's an infectious joy in the movements and gestures of each of the many individual figures that cohere in admirable harmony as an overall breathtakingly dynamic composition, nicely empowered by the uninhibited and wildly sensuous approach to both scale and color. As much as I like the alligator creature in the foreground, my favorite vignette is the figure being flung like paint from a bucket in the far right corner-- as much as any single part of this, it sums up the guileless magic and sheer joy of this musical and inspiring painting.
