a thousand ships by lolitaAgogo a thousand ships by lolitaAgogo
edit: This painting along with "Secret Identity" will be at Gallery Space242 in Boston starting Friday 1.28.2011. If you're local, let me know if you stop in!
RSVP at Space242.com

i made some epic mistakes with the background of this painting! so after drastic cosmetic surgery using mod podge and a slicing sharp exacto blade it's now two layers of paper, foreground and background. a nice mistake but one i dont ever want to repeat.

moral? if youre unsure how to do something LOOK IT UP. or at least plan it in pencil first. dont just go for it at 2 am with caffeine racing through your cardiovascular system instead of blood.

11 x 10 in watercolor on arches paper.

I've always liked the look of a multi-layer, cut-and-paste traditional art piece. Not random collages of magazine images or what have you, but things like this where it works out beautifully. If you hadn't said it was a mistake, I would have thought it was entirely intentional! For many years now, in the farthest reaches of my mind I've been contemplating doing a series of images where the background is painted in a stand-alone way, and I just add cutout characters to the foreground...but I digress. I wish I could see this in the gallery next week! Boston is so very far away :( Come do a Seattle gallery!

Also, I love this guy's vomit XD Is that a sailboat??

YES some kind of boat...i didnt plan it out well. it's here in a frame next to me now (didn't sell, c'est la vie) and i keep considering going back in to fix it. i love the small mermaids, it gives me the impression that these two are gigantic.

it really is fun to cut things out like that. one must have a super sharp knife and some patience to make it through arches paper. i could see you pulling it off in an amazing way.

always wanted to visit seattle <3 how close are you to it?

Eh, Seattle's an eight hour drive, no day trip ^^; I love the area, though, so it'd be worth it. Plus it's so much closer than the East Coast!

Oh, you've just described how I ruin every piece I start on. Lack of technique. Very very difficult to learn on one's own. The amount of error in trial and error could leave me with nothing but pieces with great potential that ended up in the scrap heap.
However, this one for you is incredible. The layering effect really really adds to this piece.
May I ask how you get such a deep uniform color for the background? I get brush strokes or varied flow, can't seem to get the deep tones with water color.
Also, are you using any masking fluid to construct your detailed patterns (here and other pieces)?
Have you done a tutorial yet? Key word YET. ;)
If you come to Arizona to vacation, would you consider free room and board in exchange for a few lessons? ;p

thank you very much! it's winsor newton tube watercolor in cadmium yellow. tube colors are very vibrant. i never use cakes or anything. this is a solid yellow. also the paper is cotton, absorbent and can grip the color. (i tell you again truly, that good paper is key!)

i didn't use masking fluid...but i did have to wait for each scale to dry before painting one next to it. a very long process <3 haha i don't think i am organized enough for a tutorial YET lol, but as always never hesitate to ask how i did something!

haha! i have never been to arizona, i appreciate the offer. we have so much snow outside this winter i'd love to escape anywhere warm!

Hrm, I have some tube paints, but methinks I need to get some deeper colors. I'll check out the paper. Think I"m using a hot pressed 140 maybe. Likely the problem, but I wanted to just pain around and try to find my voice before I started using really nice stuff.

Wow on the detail technique. That brings to mind that patience is something I'm def lacking.

I think it only got up into the high 60s today, with lots of sun. ;)

Is it really weird if I say I like her boobs? I love them! I like the shape and how the (her) right one is implied, with no lines. Her face is adorable as well  And the little bit of red in her collar bone... Oh my god, I just totally love this! This comment is all over the place

LOL! He's even got a treasure chest coming out of his mouth, as well as mermaids and sharks and other stuff... I wonder, how big are these creatures compared to actual people?! :XD:

Anywho, I really like this piece. It's quite humorous! I lol'ed. :D Epic poses! Really dynamic. The woman looks aggressive, yet dainty, and the man looks awkward, yet controlled in the face.

The details are really wonderful, their clothes (skin?) are very appealing and fashionable (especially the woman's outfit) and your application of watercolor paint is very interesting. I really dig the idea of cutting the figures out and placing them on a different background, too; I can't believe I've never thought about doing that before, lol. There's also a nice little shadow created by that, especially around the man's hand. Oh, the yellow background ties in well with the yellow on the woman's body. Somehow, tying the background to her makes her look even more powerful. C:

Heh, sorry for the long comment, but I really dig this, and there's a lot of strong points to it. It's very inspirational and eye-catching.

there was this story i read once about brothers and one had the ability to swallow the entire ocean. i was thinking of it when i made him. so he can be regular size, but with an incredible ability! although i do like the idea of them as titans.
thank you so much for your kind comments. i'm really excited because this piece and secret identity will be in a show in january about good vs evil <3

The end result is just wonderful! My comment was going to be about the wonderful vibrancy of the background, so it was funny to read your description. The yellow is a wonderful contrast to the detailed figures. I especially like the scales.

i just invented another character actually, but i cant decide who to oppose her with. i call her villainess view. it's sort of silly but i think the antagonist should be in love with her. everything she looks at turns to dust and darkness. haha. this is what happens when i get sleepy ideas.

I do know what you mean. There's something about the scales that draws your eye to them. Maybe because their diamond shape? They don't look like the typical "Lizard man" scales. I like things like that. They kind of force people to really look at things and not just breeze by them.
